A Green Start for Greentech Media's CMS

Greentech Media Screenshot

Greentech Media is the dominant online media presence in the green technology space; their website is an invaluable resource for industry professionals, researchers, and emerging companies. The company contracted with Vector Media Group to develop a Content Management System that could efficiently accommodate the vast and diverse amount of content residing on their website, while powering a dynamic publishing model designed specifically for the greentech industry.

Greentech Media is a fully integrated online-media company that produces cutting-edge news reporting, in-depth market research, and focused industry events. The site is a robust repository of industry news, research and data, all requiring precise specifications for access, configuration and presentation.

Greentech Media’s team came to Vector Media Group with a massive amount of content residing on a poorly functioning and fragmented Content Management System. It was inefficient, cumbersome and hindering the company’s rapid growth. Built on multiple platforms with separate logins, interfaces, files, and databases, the old system was far too rigid and generally ill-suited to the volume and characteristics of the content produced by the company.

We decided to apply open-source technologies to design and build a comprehensive CMS using the ExpressionEngine content management platform, which allows site users, clients and industry players to access news, research articles and analyses—including premium content.

Over 5000 articles, research reports, and blog posts—and thousands of comments—were seamlessly migrated from the old proprietary system to the new CMS. Launching the new site with all this in place resulted in an improved informational architecture and enhanced the content’s marketing impact and performance.

The CMS architecture we created allowed the site’s designers to create a 360 degree, easily navigable view of the content on the site, efficiently categorized into appropriate Greentech channels. All of the site’s content effectively cross-pollinates the existing channels, ensuring that users are seeing all of the information pertinent to their given interests.

The events functionality we built enables event promotion and management from a single interface, while providing clients and green industry leaders a single access point for industry event information. We also integrated the live CMS event data with the interactive flash calendar by building a set of dynamic XML feeds for the calendar to access.

The advanced permission and authority structure we created ensures the integrity of the site content and the publishing process, allowing numerous editors at various authority levels the ability to create, edit and prioritize new and existing content—while ensuring that only authorized users can take articles live.
