Spanning more than 5 subdomain “sites” and having a top-200 US Alexa Rank, Woot is one of the most heavily-trafficked sites in America. While they have always collected stats about their traffic — where it comes from, what parts of the site are visited most often, etc… — Woot found that the volume of data made it hard to pick out information they could use to improve the site.
We first interviewed key Woot stakeholders to understand the kinds of information and reporting that would help them improve their day-to-day work. Using these requirements, we devised a new Google Analytics setup and re-wrote the tracking code with custom targeting functions to assist in collecting and segmenting various visitor behaviors. After working with Woot’s technology team to implement this code, we prepared automatic, emailed reporting customized for each stakeholder’s most relevant topics.
