The ATLAS Experiment at CERN

CERN, the world-famous European Organization for Nuclear Research, brought in Vector to build a Drupal website that would showcase their work on one of the biggest experiments in history—ATLAS. We worked hard to build the site to be effective, customizable, and accommodating to the organization's international staff.

Situation Creating a Customizable Drupal Site

Vector Media Group partnered with a major scientific client— The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN)— to develop an effective site for an experiment called ATLAS. As one of the four experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (the world’s largest particle accelerator), ATLAS is an international physics experiment that aims to discover answers to important scientific questions regarding the building blocks of matter. We successfully partnered with this prominent research organization to provide them with a highly customizable website.

We built the ATLAS site using Drupal, which Vector has extensive experience working with. Drupal is an open-source CMS and was a great fit for our client’s needs as it is commonly used by major government and higher education clients. CERN already housed extensive Drupal external architecture and we successfully integrated with their large IT department to make the ATLAS site meet all of their existing requirements.

Result An Easy-To-Use Site That Gives Our Client Creative Control

Our client wanted a strong element of creative control over the site, so we focused on building a site which could easily be customized to fit their creative vision. We created a system of shortcodes that gave the client control over exactly how their site would be laid out and displayed, without the need for their staff to know any HTML. The site was built to accommodate a wide variety of images and utilized various types of image carousels. We also provided them with easy-to-use training materials on how to effectively manage their site.

Since ATLAS is an internationally based experiment, we translated the site into several languages and gave it multilingual support for future expansions. And we ensured that the site could be accessed seamlessly from any device by making it fully responsive and mobile friendly.

Over the course of our work on this large project, we developed a close and collaborative relationship with the great people at CERN, which significantly contributed to the site’s success. We built the ATLAS team a site that works well with their existing technology and is highly informative about the important scientific developments that are taking place.
